Truth or Dare?

What are true things and five false ones about me?

By Rebecca Cantrell

1. I broke an arm during a naked photo shoot.

2. Although we met in Berlin, I was a Croatian war bride.

3. I was once bitten by a shark in a marine petting zoo.

4. I swore my way out of the Cairo Airport.

5. The building where I had my first kiss is now a museum.

6. I smuggled aluminum money out of East Berlin in a diplomatic car.

7. I won third place in the nation in Records Management.

8. My high school was burned down by an arsonist. It wasn't me.

9. I flew a helicopter across the Bering Strait.

10. I can play the piccolo.

And one more thing, this one true. I have a paperback coming out TODAY! It's the FIRST THRILLS anthology and it contains my short story "On the Train," along with Kelli Stanley's "Children's Day" and stories by
*deep breath* Sean Michael Bailey, Ryan Brown, Ken Bruen, Bill Cameron, Stephen Coonts, Jeffrey Deaver, Karen Dionne, JT Ellison...

*another deep breath* Theo Gangi, Rip Gerber, Heather Graham, Gregg Hurwitz, Joan Johnston, Alex Kava and Deb Carlin, John Lescroart, CJ Lyons and...

*final deep breath* Grant Mackenzie, Michael Palmer and Daniel James Palmer, Marc Paoletti, Cynthia Robinson, Karin Slaughter, and Wendi Corsi Staub.

Good lord, what a list! It reads like an international best seller! I want to choose them all, but, okay, my guesses for the true stuff are: 2,3,5,8,10

Thanks! It was fun to write.

You got 1 of 5, Sue Ann! I feel like a very accomplished liar now.

Congrats on your new release today! That's quite a line-up of amazing writers.

When I first read your list of truths and lies, I thought they had to be for Hannah Vogel...

Rebecca Cantrell said...

Some of the might be true for Hannah too, Meredith!

I see that I have scared everyone off guessing.

Thanks for having the courage, Sue Ann!

I want all of them to be true, Rebecca, but since we're limited to five I'm guessing: 1, 3, 4, 6, and 7.

Congratulations on the new book. A great crowd, all of you.

Ah, the ever-fascinating Rebecca Cantrell, aka Bekka Black, aka ... ?? ;)

My guesses for the truth:

3, 5, 7, 8, 10.

And to add to Becky's plug for FIRST THRILLS, if you head to the Big Thrill website, you can read two stories for free! "The Thief" by Greg Hurwitz and "Children's Day" by Yours Truly. All the royalties for the book go to ITW to keep membership dues free!

Rebecca Cantrell said...

Me too, Michael! Well, most of them.

You have guessed suspiciously well: 4 out of 5.

Rebecca Cantrell said...

Bekka Black has a whole DIFFERENT set of truths and lies. That's the joy of creating her. :)

Do you have a link for that free download? I poked around, but couldn't find it.

You, Kelli, are 2 for 5.

Michael is scaring me.

Kelli Stanley said...

Michael is a scary dude ... it's that piece of shrapnel in his jaw, I think. ;)

I'm bummed I didn't penetrate your subterfuge better! But am now refining my second guess, based on received data, to 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9.

But I really do want you to play the piccolo!

Here's the download link for the free short stories:

Maybe Michael uses the shrapnel as a truth diviner?

Thanks for the link! Free short stories, and both excellent at!

This time you are 3 for 5!

Kelli Stanley said...

Well, I don't have shrapnel, but I do have fillings, and they should be good for more than 3/5 (and holding teeth together, of course) ... hmm. You and your mysterious ways!! ;)

When I have a spare moment, I'll try to solve the logic problem ...

Reece said...

You are truly an international woman of mystery, Rebecca! I guess that the true ones are: 2, 5, 7, 8 and 10. Congratulations on the FIRST THRILLS story!

Rebecca Cantrell said...

Thanks for the congrats, Reece! And to think that I worried I wouldn't come up with anything remotely interesting to write about today. Of course, even the true ones are not all that they seem.

You are 2 for 5, Reece!

That bit of shrapnel (and my brother claims it must have worked free of the jawbone by now, but I have no idea how these things work) enables me to carry magnets on my chin . . . . Well, no, that's a lie.

I feel good about 1, 4, 6, and 7. So, I'll drop 3 and propose 10.

Michael Wiley said...

(Oh, and I think you may have played the piccolo as you flew in a helicopter across the Bering Strait.)

Rebecca Cantrell said...

I have flown helicopters. But I can't tell you how close you are, Michael, without giving up the gig. You are not perfect yet though (in this regard, anyway, can't vouch for other areas).

Kelli: Maybe it's time to stop listening to the radio on those fillings and retune 'em. :)

Joshua Corin said...

1, 4, 6, 7, 8. And your Powerball number is Pi.

Kelli Stanley said...

But Becks, those fillings are how I listen to all those 1940 radio stations ... ;)

xoxo

Rebecca Cantrell said...

I'm now buying a Powerball ticket, Josh. You are 5 for 5 and it's not even noon yet!

Kelli: Stick with the oldies! Josh did all the heavy lifting.

Kelli Stanley said...

Sigh. And I so wanted to hear some piccolo music!

Now I feel obligated to overexplain, like a bad epilogue:

1 - True. But I was just a little kid wanting my picture taken in the new yard. To my son's horror, we often ran around naked when we younger than 5. Ah, the 70's!

2 - That was my close friend, not me.

3 - Nope.

4 - It was, according to the man who became my husband anyway "some might powerful swearing."

5 - That museum is actually where I had my first kiss with my high school sweetheart. I am THAT old.

6 - Did that. Still have it.

7 - Did that too. Thank you, Mrs. Donoho!

8 - True. On both counts.

9 - Flew helicopters in AK, but never there.

10 - No musical talent at all.

Thanks for guessing! And nicely done, Josh, even if Michael did lead the way!

Gabi said...

I don't think 1 is true but if it is, I'd better hear this at the next conference.

I think you were a Croatian war bride.

I think you bit the shark, not the other way around.

Who hasn't sworn their way out of the Cairo airport.

A first kiss museum is too fun to be false.

Smuggling implies intent and I think if you did inadvertently (subtle legal advice) transport some questionable thing in a diplomatic car you are 1)immune from prosecution as the item was covered by the convention for the treatment of foreign diplomats and their property and 2)you're LYING, LYING, LYING and this is not true and you'd like to talk to your lawyer and your consulate in that order.

I have no idea what national Records Management is but congratulations.

It burned. It wasn't you. True and well-done (literally and figuratively).

9. I would't let you drive.

10. Like in Three Coins in the Fountain? She was lying, too.

Can't wait to see how I did.

Gabi said...

I didn't look ahead. Josh was 5/5???? Michael was 4/5??? Guess we know who you've been drinking with.

Congratulations on the new release.
