"Do the costs to promote a book sometimes equal the advance you got for it, and does that make you question A) writing it or B) doing all that expensive promotion?"

This post is going to be super depressing, so let me launch right into it.

The question of promo hits home for me right now. I have just spent three weeks editing, every day, for as long as I can keep my eyes open, in order to meet my deadline, which has been extended to tonight, thank god. But I’m tearing my hair out, because there’s one chapter in the middle I just can’t get right, and I’m running out of time.

I am not a fast writer. I’m fickle and uncertain. What looks fine today looks awful tomorrow. Almost always. There are rare exceptions where I’m happy with my words, even after letting them sit, and when that happens, my world becomes temporarily full of sunshine and butterflies.

But usually not. Especially not the first chapter, which always looks awful, no matter what.

Right now nothing matters to me except cut, fix, prune, fluff. Words, not hair. That leaves zero time to run my business efficiently, or clean the house, or update my website, or be sociable, or keep up with my social media, or eat.

So I’m left wondering, what is going to give? It’s the big suspenseful question for me. Will I: A) go bankrupt B) insane C) watch my books fail because I don’t have time or money to promote them?

Probably all three.

The only nice one is D) eventually the books will start paying back, and then I can maybe get a little bit of my life back.

Promotion in a simpler time
Sometimes I think D is possible, but then I wake up.

I guess the answer to the question is, I will keep trying to fit in social media, and as many writing events as possible, but if something is going to give, it’s going to be promotion. Because what’s the point of promoting if I don’t have anything to promote?

There. I’ve thoroughly depressed everyone, including myself.

Writing -- is it worth it? Very much so.

Now back to that impossible chapter.
